Swim Camp Catalina IX is in its 9th year. It is a 5 day/4 night adventure. The camp takes place at Two Harbors, which is a remote, unincorporated townlet on the northwest side of Catalina Island. Swim Camp Catalina is limited to 42 campers who will stay in the recently remodeled dorms.
Two Harbors, which can only be accessed by boat or plane, have a population of only 298. The 1/2 mile side isthmus, which is bordered by Banning Harbor to the northwest and Cat Harbor to the southeast, has a single general store, snack bar, restaurant, and hotel. It is hard to believe that Southern California, with a population of 24 million people, lies less than 21 miles from the island. The Two Harbors isthmus is rich in history as it is home to the western most Civil War barracks built in 1864 (which still stands today) and the area was a popular set for Hollywood movies (over 300 motion pictures were filmed on Catalina). In fact, the bison which freely roam Catalina were brought to the island for the filming of the 1925 classic called “The Vanishing American.”
Campers can expect calm water with high visibility and temperatures ranging from 59 to 68 degrees. Swimmers will enjoy exploring the sea caves and picturesque coves while viewing abundant sea life. Fees include room (double occupancy), 11 meals, boat transportation to and from San Pedro, and insurance.
